Veet EasyWax Electrical Roll-on Kit

   Not long ago, a friend recommended I try salon waxing, as it's truly effective and the results are long-term. So, I booked an appointment with my local salon and, after getting over the fear of the first rip of that wax strip, I eventually got hooked. I loved the feeling of going to a salon and getting the treatment done by a professional, rather than taking ages in the shower at home shaving away and inevitably missing little patches only to discover them later when a friend embarrassingly points them out.

   However, around six months in, after booking an appointment and being told that my usual beautician was not available, I went to an appointment with a new beautician at the same salon and, to put it lightly, it could've gone a lot better. Her style of treatment (alongside her disappointing unprofessional manner) put me off salon waxing for a good few months and, sadly, I reverted back to shaving.
    Last week, I was sent a package which included some of Veet's newest at home waxing kits: the 'EasyWax Electrical Roll-on Kit'* for larger areas such as legs, arms and underarms, and the 'Face Precision Wax & Care'* for smaller areas such as eyebrows. A slight bit dubious (having recalled my last experience with waxing), I sucked it up and thought, "I trust myself", and went ahead with it.

   The EasyWax Roll-on kit was easy to use, effective and, so far, the results have been long-lasting - basically everything I was expecting from a quality depilatory product brand such as Veet.

   The pack comes with an electronic heater, which is a little bit tricky to grip while you're waxing due to its width (though, I do have rather dwarfish hands), a plug for the heater, several finishing wipes (absolutely necessary if you don't want spare bits of wax sticking to everything), a 50ml wax refill, 12 wax strips and, obviously, an instruction leaflet.

   Once you've read the instructions, the waxing itself is an easy affair. Simply heat the wax refill for around 20-30 minutes, roll the wax on in the direction of hair growth, apply the strip and rub it down, then rip it off as quickly as possible. I'm not going to lie, it's a little bit painful, and I did feel like abandoning ship halfway through and shaving the rest off - but I got stuck in (literally) and I'm really glad I did so.

   The wax removed most of the hair on my legs, though tweezers were required on a few stragglers around the tricky parts (i.e. the knees... ouch). But, overall, I'm super happy with how my skin looks and feels - and I'm saving myself the £25 I'd spend on going to the salon!

   I'd like to say that the added 'Pomegranate oil' made a difference to the smoothness of my skin, but I have no other home-waxing kit to compare it to, so it was a bit lost on me! Although, my skin felt just as smooth as it did after a salon wax, so I'm pretty pleased.

Knowing when to Treat Yourself


   It's been two months since I really started upping my fitness routine. In that two months I've cycled rigorously three or four times a week, started doing stretches and toning exercises twice a day and walking whenever I can instead of taking the car. Although I've FELT leaner and more toned, the visual results aren't up to par.

   There's only one real reason for this: I'm not eating healthily enough. I'm stuck in those eating habits where I feel like I'm obliged to finish every last morsel on my plate and to not let food go to waste (including my mum's delicious home-baked sponge cakes and scones). I fill myself up without thinking, "Okay, I'm full, I need to stop". AND I'm terrible for snacking when I'm bored; when I have nothing to do, I'll start thinking of food, and then I'll find that I can't stop and I give in to cravings.

   I need to know when to treat myself, and when to have the willpower to say no to food. So, I've put together a few rules to stick by, and hopefully if any of you are going through the same thing, maybe you could help me and add some more to the list?

1. Work out your goals.

   If you're trying to lose weight/tone up/build muscle etc., it's vital that you know what you're trying to achieve. Maybe think about keeping a photo of your fitspiration, and think, for example, "Would [insert name here] be giving in to maple bacon pancakes right now?"

2. Decide a deadline.

   If you need to lose weight quickly (perhaps before your next beach holiday), maybe think about sticking to a strict eating regime. Mapping out your deadline will give you an idea of how often you can treat yourself. If you don't have a deadline in mind, you'll find that treats will generally become more abundant, and that ideal body will slip further and further away.

3. Write down what you eat.

   I'm not saying calorie count - we all know how much of a mind game that can be. Just write down everything you eat, as you eat it. It should deter you from picking up a chocolate bar, as you'll have to admit to yourself that you're consuming junkfood. And wouldn't it look so much more satisfying to see a page of fruits and greens rather than the bad stuff?

4. Eat little and often.

   This is a phrase you'll have heard many times before, but I can't even explain how relevant it is to serial treaters. If you're consuming less than 1000 calories a day, your body goes into crave mode and you will instantly feel like you need to snack. However, if you eat a side plate-sized portion of food (GOOD food) five times a day, I guarantee that you'll find yourself thinking about those Krispy Kremes less and less.

5. Substitute.

   If all else fails and you can't resist that evening sugar kick when you're on the sofa watching Orange is the New Black, try a cup of peppermint tea and honey rather than a regular brew with two sugars, or almond butter on rye bread rather than Nutella on white toast, or even greek yoghurt and strawberries rather than a bowl of Coco Pops. There are so many healthy foods out there, you just need to get creative.

Messy Top Bun Tutorial





































   It's been a long while since I've recorded and posted a tutorial on this blog. Simply put, when I discover a new hairstyle, I tend to stick with it for a good couple of months before experimenting to find a new one.

   At the moment, this messy top bun has been really useful when I'm running a little bit late or when I have to quickly run out the door. It's super easy to put together; you'll only need a hairbrush, a few hair grips and two hair bands (and, of course, some hair).

   This style suits medium to long hair best, and make sure it's either second-day-hair, or at least texturised with some sort of spray to help it stay in place a bit better.

Health Food Haul June 2014

   As I've never actually had a proper look round my local Holland & Barrett, I decided to pop in. I ended up seeing a whole load of foods that I'm really interesting in trying, simply because I'm currently changing up my eating habits and attempting to introduce more nutrition into my life. I feel like I still eat too many processed foods, and the way to counteract that is to completely avoid them, and exchange them for for that are much higher in nutritional value.

DIY Padded Fabric Notice Board

   I have a never ending love for toile de jouy; it tells a story with each little print that appears in its pattern, and looks so chic on little details in a room, for example on a vase, cushion or throw.

   Toiles were originally throw-away fabrics used to test a pattern created by a designer. They were commonly made from cheap materials, as often many were required to perfect a single design. However, it was not until the decorating pattern 'toile de jouy' was applied, making the design surge to popularity in the mid-18th century, and reviving in the 2000s to feature on assortments of furniture, wallpapers and clothing.

   To compliment my toile de jouy bedcovers, I decided to create my own noticeboard with the same pattern, and post it on here so that you can try it out too!

   It's a fairly easy process and can be completed in a few hours. You will need:

* Toile de jouy fabric (make sure it isn't too heavy, as it will be difficult to manipulate)
* A staple gun or nail gun
* A plain corkboard or a frame measuring around A2 size
* An A2 piece of cardboard or firm backing (only if you're using a frame instead of a corkboard)
* At least five metres of centimetre-wide ribbon in your choice of colour
* A variety of small buttons
* A roll of cotton wool (available from Boots)
* Two picture frame brackets with screws (available from Homebase)
* A screwdriver
* A needle and thread


1. If you're using a canvas frame, remove the canvas to leave the bare wood. If you're using a corkboard, skip step number two.

2. Place the frame over a piece of card board or other strong backing.

3. Roll your cotton wool over the surface of your board at least three times over. If you're using a frame, roll the cotton over with the frame facing up.

4. This is the hard bit. Place your fabric over the top of the cotton wool and flip the whole thing over. Secure the fabric by pulling it tight over the edges and fixing it into the back using your nail gun or staple gun. Make sure the fabric is tight, otherwise it'll end up bulging. Fold the corners in carefully to create a neat edge. This may require two people to keep the fabric tight at all times!

5. Your board should look a bit like this from the back; sides folded over neatly and fixed into place with staples or nails.

6. Lay out your ribbon in an even criss cross design over the front of the board. Sew your ribbon into the fabric on the back of the board at each end - again, make sure the ribbon is tight so that it hold in your notices properly!

7. Sew in your buttons where each ribbon meets another.

8. Attach your picture brackets onto the back of the board with your screwdriver - or skip this step if you want your notice board to stand on the floor or a table!

Chia Seeds - Neal's Yard - £2.49 for 100g

These seeds are great when mixed with almond milk or orange juice and various fruits to create a delicious dessert - they soak in the moisture and become gelatinous when left to soak, a bit like pudding rice! They're full of fibre to help aid digestion, and omega-3 fats to maintain healthy organs.

Almond Milk - Provamel - £0.89 for 1 litre

This milk is my favourite alternative to dairy milk. It's low in calories and tastes amazing; I love pouring it over a whole grain cereal, or using it in porridge with a little bit of cinnamon. Almond milk contains vitamin E which is great for maintaining healthy skin, and plenty of iron which aids muscle strength.

Manuka Honey - Medibee - £10.99 for 250g

I absolutely adore honey - I'm a little bit like Winnie the Pooh. Drizzled over cereal or mixed in with tea, it can completely transform any meal or drink, and it's SOOOO much better for you than refined sugars. It's antibacterial, so it's great for helping get rid of mouth ulcers, colds and strep throat, and it's good for aiding digestion.

Quinoa - Neal's Yard - £4.79 for 500g

So many people have great things to say about quinoa; it's the perfect alternative to rice or pasta and it's super tasty when mixed in with homemade sauces and organic vegetables. It's full of fibre, protein and iron - basically, it's the ideal superfood, and it won't leave you feeling hungry.

Flaxseed - Linwoods - £5.19 for 425g

Flaxseed is a real miracle ingredient. It can be used to make anything from bread to brownies and can also be mixed in with yoghurts and fruit to make a quick snack. It's a great source of omega-3, fibre and lignans to act as an antioxidant.
