Exclusive: Harrods x Rupert Sanderson

In partnership with the British Fashion Council, Harrods have released their second Inside the Studio series, allowing us special insight into the ateliers of four amazing designers: Matthew Williamson, Antonio Berardi, Alice Temperly and iconic shoe designer, Rupert Sanderson.

Art Style Love is able to share with you an exciting look at Sanderson’s work ethics and designs in an exclusive video, plus a little background info on the designer’s spectacular career!

Astonishingly, Sanderson was born on the same Malaysian island as none other than Mr Jimmy Choo himself (there must be something in the water) before moving to East London, earning a degree from London University and landing himself a job in advertising.

After a time, the designer enrolled in the world-renowned Cordwainers College (a division of LCF) and, during his summer break, rode a motorbike to Italy, the centre of high-quality leather craftsmanship, to learn all that he could about producing the perfect shoe.

This learning process provided the foundations for the way in which Sanderson designs and crafts shoes for his own collections today; in true Italian sense, he states his design philosophy as ‘less is more’, and aspires to make a women feel sexy in his pieces. However, it’s not just about the vision; Sanderson isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty:

"To be a shoe designer, I believe you need to know how to make shoes. It is craft based - it needs to be understood, you have to love doing it, enjoy the process in the factory - not the frothier side of fashion. Day to day what gets you through is the craft"

Though Sanderson’s designs undoubtedly possess that classic Italian flair, the coolness of the British fashion scene is always present, both in his work and in his mindset:

“When it comes to the British aesthetic - we are blessed, we are the envy of the world. There's a huge pot of different influences. It's in your bones as a Brit, you've grown up with it.”

Who said you can’t have the best of both worlds?

To this day, Sanderson has designed shoes in collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld, Louise Goldin and the Royal Opera, and has founded talent-scouting award, ‘Fashion Fringe’ shoes, alongside fashion commentator, Colin McDowell. Selected pieces, including the celebrated ‘Estelle’ sandal and stunning 'Wilson' shoe, from his AW14 collection are available at Harrods.
